Case/Situational Analysis Questions
1. Read the following situation prudenti and answer the questions that follow: [30]
Ramesh and Prakash are classmates of school life. Ramesh's father' was civil servant who have been shifted from Butwal to Pokhara. Prakash 's father was a businessman who is running small scale ogro-based industry. Both Ramesh and Prakash are good friends and both are excellent in study. However, they have different personality and attitudes. Ramesh was a social person and had a large circle of friends alongwith Prakash and enjoyed with them. He had habit of gathering all the friends and eager to maintain interactive relation in leisure time. However, Prakash was very reserved and shy in nature. He enjoyed reading and liked to spend more time reading books. He usually avoid discussions and parties with friends in leisure time. He always thought about his future dream of being a professional manager as well as an entrepreneur. He gained knowledge through reading whereas Ramesh learned things through discussion.
After completing school life, both of them completed their graduation in Kathmandu together. Both joined MBS program launched by Tribhuvan University. Prakash was a high achieving student and he had ability of multitasking. He always completed assignments with in time limit and completed all the project work before time frame. He passed MBS with distinction whereas Ramesh passed MBS only with first division. However, both of them were selected for job in an IT company situated at Kathmandu.. They were placed in a marketing department of the company. Ramesh by nature fitted on the job and his performance was overrated at the end of the year. Prakash's performance was below average and he was reprimanded on several occasion during the probation period. Finally, marketing manager Mr. Ishwar advised him to look for a job elsewhere. Prakash was very upset and started looking for another job in the city. When Ramesh came to know this, he felt very sad for the event and decided to meet HR manager, Mr. Arun. He requested Mr. Arun to provide a chance to Prakash, but Mr. Arun felt helpless as his department manager did not want Prakash in his team. On further request from Ramesh, Mr. Arun said, let me see if there is any vacancy in any other department of the company but I cannot promise'.
Fortunately, there was vacant post in Research and Development (R&D) department of the company, which was located far away from the head office. Prakash was transferred to this department and he decided that he would prove himself with this new opportunity. He did assigned job with full of dedication and hard work and his performance judged as excellent. The R&D manager Mr. Vijay considered him as an excellent performer and recommended him for promotion.
Few days later, company received a project from a prestigious client of UAE for development of software on the basis of its requirement. The project manager Mr. Kamal selected a team of seven people, from various department of the company to work on the project. Prakash and Ramesh were selected for the project and Prakash was made the project leader. Prakash was concerned about his status as the project leader and felt responsible to accomplish the assigned job within time frame. He tried to maintain strict discipline among the team members and guided them to be responsible. He strictly instructed to team members not to be relaxed till the project work is completed. Due to this attitude of Prakash, conflict was created with other team members including Mr. Ramesh. The team effectiveness gradually decreased and simultaneously affected the schedule of the project. Finally, Prakash decided to call the entire team members for an informal discussion. During discussion, he tried to justify his stand on maintaining the required standard for meeting deadline. In discussion, all the team members including Ramesh blamed him of being selfish to get credit of the project work. Finally, Prakash convinced on the combined ownership of team members in the performance of the project. All the team members including Ramesh convinced with commitment. Therefore, team worked hard and the project was completed in time and handed over to client on time. Project manager celebrated the success with all the team members by organizing a party and rewarded to whole team.
Questions:
a) Sketch the personality of Mr. Ramesh and Mr. Prakash based on big five personality traits.
b) Evaluate the level of commitment of Ramesh at marketing department and R&D department.
c) Do you see any role of impressive management in resolving conflict between Prakash and team members? Discuss.
